Commissioner Manolo Reyes, District 4

Commissioner Manolo Reyes is a native of Victoria de Las Tunas, Cuba and migrated to the United States with his parents in 1959 seeking political refuge from Fidel Castro’s regime. Reyes’ father served as the last pre-Castro mayor of Victoria de Las Tunas. He soon received his undergraduate and post graduate degrees in economics at the University of Florida in Gainesville and is an active Gator Alumni in the South Florida community.

In the 1980s he launched his political career as a budget and finance administrator for the City of Miami, where he served as the principal economic analyst for the Overtown Park West Redevelopment Project, considered by many to be the initial and crucial program for the redevelopment of the Overtown Park West area near Downtown Miami. He later was the principal budget analyst for Miami Dade County Public Schools and served on the City of Miami Code Enforcement Board and the City of Miami’s Homeland Defense and Neighborhood Improvement Bond Issue Oversight Board.

Commissioner Reyes is a former small business owner. Having built a family business from the ground up, he knows what it takes to create jobs, keep costs down, and produce revenues. Commissioner Reyes also taught economics at Miami Dade College, and math and economics at Westland High School, where he led the school’s Florida International University (“FIU”) dual enrollment program in economics. In November 2017, Commissioner Reyes was first elected to the City of Miami Commission by an overwhelming 57% of the vote and was reelected in 2019 without opposition. In December 2019, he was appointed by the majority of his colleagues to serve as the Chair of the Downtown Development Authority, a city instrumentality to assist in the promotion and development of Downtown Miami among other purposes. Commissioner Reyes has resided in District 4 for nearly five decades with his wife Selva “Chacha” Reyes. They are the proud parents of two adult children and grandparents to three boys.

Recap, 2017-2019

Here are some of the successes that together we have accomplished for District 4 from 2017 to date. 

• Worked with non-for-profits to provide much needed services to residents.
• Provided 2,000+ families with food through the help of partners such as Farm Share.
• Partnered with the Miami Foundation to expand the Elderly Assistance Program in District 4 that provides monetary relief to over 280 seniors.
• Provided 3,000+ backpacks filled with supplies to children thanks to support from the private sector.
• Secured more than $11,919,500 million for the Shenandoah Pool and Park enhancements, Coral Nook Park, Bay of Pig Memorial Park, West End Park, Bryan Park, Dog Run Park, and 3 new Mini Parks.
• Established the first Solar Tree & Canopy renewable energy initiative with FPL at all city parks.
• Worked with our Capital Improvement and Public Works Department to advance District 4 resident infrastructure projects in the pipeline for several years to finally get them from shovel ready to ground breaking.
• Invested $3 million+ in repaving nearly 2 square miles of neighborhood streets.
• $3.5 million in drainage improvements have been completed.
• Approximately 60,114 linear feet (11.3 miles) of sidewalk improvements, repair and replacements have been completed.
• Implemented the LED Street Light Conversion Program with FPL replacing 816 Lights installed and 852 currently being installed.
• Secured more than $11 million for capital improvement projects in District 4 from the Miami Forever Bond/Reprogramming that occurred in December.
• Initiated a District 4 Tree Planting consisting of Phase One 905 trees in the city right of ways with 470 of them planted already and Phase Two with approximately 375 trees in procurement.
• These are just a few of the larger scale projects we have focused on, while never losing sight of the everyday issues that affect our residents, including code compliance, solid waste, permitting, transportation, property taxes, and even FPL bill issues.
