NOTICE OF REFERENDUM SPECIAL ELECTION
TO AMEND THE MIAMI CITY CHARTER
TO BE HELD ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 20, 2024
IN THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA PURSUANT TO RESOLUTION NO. R-24-0153

Notice is hereby given that a Referendum Special Election will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 from 7:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. in the City of Miami, Florida, at the polling places in the several Referendum Special Election precincts designated by the Supervisor of Elections of Miami-Dade County, Florida, as set forth herein, unless otherwise provided by law, for the purpose of submitting to the qualified electors of the City of Miami, Florida, the following question:

Shall Sections 4, 20, 36, and 48 of Miami’s Charter be amended to eliminate the Office of the Independent Auditor General and references thereto, such duties and responsibilities being assumed by the Office of the Independent Inspector General?”

This Charter Amendment will amend Sections 4, 20, 36 and 48 of the Miami Charter to eliminate the Office of the Independent Auditor General, and references thereto.

Notice is hereby given that a Referendum Special Election will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 from 7:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. in the City of Miami, Florida, at the polling places in the several Referendum Special Election precincts designated by the Supervisor of Elections of Miami-Dade County, Florida, as set forth herein, unless otherwise provided by law, for the purpose of submitting to the qualified electors of the City of Miami, Florida, the following question:

Shall the City Charter be amended to create an Independent Office of Inspector General who shall, at a minimum, be empowered to perform investigations, audits, reviews and oversight of all City officials, employees, and departments, City funded contracts, programs, and projects for abuse, waste and mismanagement, issue subpoenas, and provide services to other City agencies and authorities, with such office’s term, powers, duties and responsibilities to be further established by ordinance?”

This Charter Amendment will create Section 52 of the Miami Charter to create the Office of the Independent Inspector General, amend Section 4 of the Miami Charter to prohibit political interference, amend Section 20 of the Miami Charter to provide for the appointment of the Independent Inspector General by the City Commission, and amend Section 36 of the Miami Charter to provide that employees employed by the City of Miami and working within the Office of the Independent Inspector General are unclassified.

Ferré Park, to enhance recreational facilities and promote community health and fitness for all our residents?”

PLEASE NOTE THAT MIAMI CITY HALL WILL NOT BE USED AS AN EARLY VOTING SITE DUE TO ITS LIMITED CAPACITY TO HANDLE THE LARGE TURNOUT EXPECTED FOR THE AUGUST 20, 2024  STATE OF FLORIDA PRIMARY ELECTION AND CITY OF MIAMI SPECIAL ELECTION. THE HISTORIC GARAGE LOCATED ON THE SAME PROPERTY AS THE FORMER MUSEUM OF SCIENCE WILL BE USED.  ADDITIONALLY, THE LITTLE HAITI CULTURAL COMPLEX WILL BE USED INSTEAD OF THE LEMON CITY BRANCH LIBRARY DUE TO RENOVATIONS (SEE BELOW*).

A secure ballot intake station (Vote-by-Mail Drop Box) will be available and staffed at each Early Voting location during Early Voting hours of operation.

When voting at any voting location, whether at an Early Voting site or on Election Day, be sure to bring a current and valid identification that contains your name, photograph and signature.  While it is not required that you bring your voter information card to the polling place, it will expedite your check-in process.
